One of the Korg B1 builds I listened to is a three box version, One of the Modules is a off board Volume Control, One is PCB and Source Selector, One is a Power Supply.
On the day one Volume Control used as a exchange for the Module was a Promethius TVC, I did not form the view the TVC was delivering the presentation I was most impressed.
The TVC was used to show how I could use my AVC as a initial volume control.
The AVC is awaiting its use as a volume control module, before any other options are compared.
As I am very impressed with the Pot's used in another configuration, it is off interest to see the outcome.

going back to the beginning of this thread...

I was having a clearout this afternoon and came across the remains of one of the passives using the digital pots that were mentioned. I can't believe the amount of attention I gave to soldering up these pesky things back in the day. Even if I could see to do it I wouldn't bother now. The only positive thing to come out of it was the experience that teaches me never to do it again.....LDRs and digi pots..oh noooo

Thanks to Google translate it seems the item was on an airline yesterday. Due date is still listed as May 11th.

It's just been delivered !

Initial impressions on the build quality are good. Might get a chance to try it out later this afternoon.

I'm trying it now.

I thought it was faulty for a few minutes, then I realised the volume has to be around 70 to get a reasonable level. None of your measly 11.

Playing a Carpenters CD, the image is solidly central and the 18" speaker seems to be contributing slightly more.

I'll see how things develop when I get to have an extended listen.

Oh, and the remote volume seems not to work from my seating position.

That's right Chris, except the battery IS included. The remote is necessary to change the 4 inputs (3 of RCA phono, 1 of bluetooth dongle) and does work, but not from my chair. 6 - 9 feet looks like max.

The volume is variable manually by the front mounted knob.

Not yet, but I'll order one.

After more listening I'm liking this pre.

If someone made a sensible offer for my best preamp I'd let it go.

So far, bad points.

1) Remote control not effective from where I sit, pending on getting a Duracell battery.

2) The display is red, I much prefer blue, or 2nd choice green. But it's barely visible from my chair.

@johnG, I'm listening at the moment to Eds Nelson pass b1 buffer, the original 2008 iteration I believe, scratch built on Vero board by Ed, not a pcb or fancy component in sight, and its fantastic. I'm using it with my Nelson pass f5 power amp, and I'm very very impressed.
I've been using passives for years and years, this b1 is in place of a shunt khozmo.
As always, both have their strengths, but I now want one of these b1s. Possibly as a straight buffer to put between the passive and power amp.
It just works so well with the f5.
Bear in mind that my speakers are 100db efficient, so I have no gain issues at all with the f5
