Yes they sounded great 20 years ago when I last rectifier rolled, the potato masher 5R4’s were second to them other 5R4’ 3rd in line. I had to start using U19’s for the amps I was making there after. Going back to low powered SE now.

U19 also direct heated. Never let me down on sound.
To repeat a point, never killed any of those rectifiers and they’ve seen work extreme.

I killed the first U19's I tried because I didn't let them warm up before putting 1500v across them,

I've got a few new old stock U19's if anyone is interested. :)

Don’t panic! Even I wouldn’t be that daft. It made a fun picture though.

Not sure an ECC81 is ever going to need a grid stopper.

I just like a bit of belt and braces as it is quoted as an RF double triode for use as an oscillator, mixer or amplifier for TV circuits. I can soon take it out and have one less component in the signal path.

I think it's a good move. You wouldn't at this stage be wanting to chase a problem or the sound turning south for the want of a grid stopper.

It can always go when you get the urge to fiddle again ...... say ..... in about a day or so ;)

Ecc81 indeed. What's wrong with 6sn7gtb, choke loaded 76,or 26..... argh. Plenty of mileage!

So many permutations so little time. But I’ve landed on something I like. :)

Where would we be if everyone did what I have done...doesn't bear thinking about.

Bedford, I suppose.
The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.
