Nothing In Particular

BTW Mr Quinn, what should we call you - is Dennis acceptable?
Sorry, I couldn't resist!
#13772 Re: Nothing In Particular
It's just my opinion based on what I've observed suggests to be the case...

I respect your opinion Ray, but I don't agree with it.
I don't need an opinion as I know.

I’m reconciled to being a house husband .
Mrs is doing an MA in social work which will qualify her in 13 months. It’s a very prestigious course with a sizeable grant and a guaranteed job. (Mrs is 16 years younger than moi)
So for a least 3 years I'm the homemaker . So I see no reason why you shouldn’t call me Dennis.
It’s my name after all or is it

Names are always a problem.
"You are sad," the Knight said in an anxious tone: "let me sing you a song to comfort you."
"Is it very long?" Alice asked, for she had heard a good deal of poetry that day.
"It's long," said the Knight, "but very, very beautiful. Everybody that hears me sing it—either it brings the tears into their eyes, or else—"
"Or else what?" said Alice, for the Knight had made a sudden pause.
"Or else it doesn't, you know. The name of the song is called 'Haddocks' Eyes'."
"Oh, that's the name of the song, is it?" Alice said, trying to feel interested.
"No, you don't understand," the Knight said, looking a little vexed.
"That's what the name is called. The name really is 'The Aged Aged Man'."
"Then I ought to have said 'That's what the song is called'?" Alice corrected herself.
"No, you oughtn't: that's quite another thing! The song is called 'Ways And Means': but that's only what it's called, you know!"
"Well, what is the song, then?" said Alice, who was by this time completely bewildered.
"I was coming to that," the Knight said. "The song really is 'A-sitting On A Gate': and the tune's my own invention."

I dont watch terrestrial tv as a rule. I havent watched it in years apart from the odd bit such as jools on new years eve, abit of football and f1.
As we have woeful internet this evening, didnt feel like music and ive run out of books for the moment, the freeview went on.
What an absolute shower of dross. Not a thing worth watching unless i wanted to watch some shite about serial killers, vacuous tits who are famous for being famous, conspiracy theorists, or something called heartbreak island.
Absolute garbage

When they describe the BBC as 'left-leaning' they're just referencing the fact that it has editorial independence because it's not owned by their rich cronies.

What also got right on my nerves was that practically every advert was either for a bookies, online casino or a bloody credit report thing that magically boosts a persons credit rating

Wait until the BBC funding is cut, those adverts will be on BBC as well, unless it gets its funding from tax.

Some Tory geezer said the BBC won't use advertising because it would damage the advertising market and si commercial channels would suffer a hit....
And I'd guess it will be some sort of tax for funding.
The Tories won't let up until thete is only one voice in the Media - their voice.
As for what Priti Patel has presented the Lords with, it is appallingly undemocratic and again they are out to stifle not only dissent but anything with which doesn't suit them.

Philosophers have only interpreted the world - the point, however, is to change it. No it isn't ... maybe we should leave it alone for a while.

Maybe it will end up like Russian state news.... endless videos of Boris looking macho, - big challenge there easier to make Mr Bean look competent.

#13783 JWST again...
Interesting about mirrors A3 and A6 - their position sensors were broken before launch but couldn't be replaced in time, so they are handled in a different way.
If you look at the status page at https://www.jwst.nasa.gov/content/webbL ... sWebb.html, you will notice that A3 & A6 are showing as still effectively stowed. An explanation:
That is an insane level of precision over an equally insane temperature range (40K -≈300K).
If you look at the status page at https://www.jwst.nasa.gov/content/webbL ... sWebb.html, you will notice that A3 & A6 are showing as still effectively stowed. An explanation:
One thing that caught my eye is that all 132 actuators are capable of sub-10 nano-meter (nm) accuracy over a 20mm range BOTH AT AMBIENT AND CRYOGENIC CONDITIONS (they were all tested at 40K).See 2018 SPIE paper by Wolf et al. "JWST mirror and actuator performance at cryo-vacuum" (find it by searching on "JWST A3 and A6 position sensors").
See sec 1.2 and 2.4.2 of the paper.
It turns out that the mirror segments at A3 and A6 have "faulty" linear variable differential transformers (LVDT) (position sensors). Each LVDT is suppose to have two coils to cancel out differential thermal effects. In each of A3 and A6, one of the two coils is faulty. The engineers had to work out a way of getting accurate readouts using only one coil in each LVDT. So they developed a different readout procedure that could use only the one good coil in each LVDT. I do not know why it was impossible to replace the faulty LVDTs before launch.
That is an insane level of precision over an equally insane temperature range (40K -≈300K).

Ahh, I remember LVDT's we used to use them on leaf spring rolling machines.

Just had a electric car charger fitted by Liam subcontracting for bp pulse.
It was easy and done with minimal intrusion.
Now we’ve got a charger on our outside wall . Very compact and smart it looks.
