I think that's his point, intent matters.pre65 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 11, 2022 11:25 amOnly you can know.Daniel Quinn wrote: ↑Fri Nov 11, 2022 11:14 am I've got one wife . Is it the start of a collection ?
But as a C programmer I would want to know if having 0 of a thing also counts as having a collection of them?

That's a bit niche Nick, but I appreciated it

On a thread that's wandered into collecting manhole covers I am not sure that there is any more niche it could be.That's a bit niche Nick

In a world where so many bad things happen every day, I'd applaud anything that keeps people from transgressing, even manhole cover spotting.

It's crossed my mind that if you define a class named collection then you don't have to instantiate an object of that class....but it still exists as a collection.....just sayin

Watch out you don't start a collection of placeholders !

Really? If you just define a class, it hasn't been instantiated, so doesn't exist other than as a concept - there is no tangible reality at that point.
Once instantiated you have an extant version of the concept.
It's like you define what a "cup" is, say, in a dictionary. At that point no cup exists... however as soon as you use that description to make a cup, one exists...

But what if you create a pointer to that class, but leave it set to NULL. Does the class exist then?Really? If you just define a class, it hasn't been instantiated, so doesn't exist other than as a concept - there is no tangible reality at that point.
But what if you use the description to make a cupholder? what then? It's like you define what a "cup" is, say, in a dictionary. At that point no cup exists... however as soon as you use that description to make a cup, one exists...

Now we're getting Socratic and I would remind you that Marx's doctoral thesis that overthrew Hegel's position kind of nailed the whole debate; ideas spring out of material - - so....
you can't have a concept of cup until you try to use one .... or something like.
He then turned his attention to economics and politics. When touring England with his friend Freddy Engels, I am told that Karl spent many a happy detour, collecting specimens of manhole covers, from his labours to describe the state of production in the most capitalistic country in the world.

Philosophers have only interpreted the world - the point, however, is to change it. No it isn't ... maybe we should leave it alone for a while.
