Excellent. So it's a small but perfectly measurable deflection. What's the next step? Cheap dial gauge calibrated; "DEEP BATH, SHALLOW BATH, SHOWER, VERY QUICK SHOWER, NO"?

I’m thinking a pot, Arduino and a display
Could add a web server and make it available on the network to our heating controller display.
I like the idea of showing what you can have with what is left though, thanks

Just a thought. You can do this with no moving parts by using a force-sensitive-resistor and a block of wood sized to fit exactly between the cylinder and the ceiling when the tank is cold. Wedge the FSR between the tank and the block of wood.

As the tank heats up it will expand, compressing the FSR and changing its resistance....

Loads of FSRs on AliExpress and elsewhere.

Thanks Jack, not heard of those
Would I use a block of wood or something compliant like a block of hard rubber - pencil eraser? I could squash an eraser and measure the force required to choose one with a suitable range. I would have to use it against a wall bracket though, as things get moved around on the shelf above and it deflects about as much as the tank. Pity it’s not near the ceiling - that would be more stable

You’re all trying to reinvent the wheel.

If you want a basin of water one day and a bath the next and you heat it by immersion you buy a cylinder with a high level immersion and a low level immersion at the bottom. Turn on the appropriate immersion.

Youre problem is your cylinder is scaled up.

I think you may be missing the point. This isn't about logic - it's about the challenge!

There is no scale in the cylinder, it is spotless inside

Like Jack said, it’s the challenge
I also think it could be useful to know not to bother running that bath as there’s not enough hot water left. Remember this is economy 7, so the bottom immersion heater only comes on overnight

Got myself some solder fume extraction for the hobby room.

The 4in Vent Axia bathroom extractor fan in the picture, will shift 187 cubic metres of air per hour. Just need to set the ductwork on a stand above any soldering work I’m doing and it’ll work nicely. As it is, it still makes short work of any smoke from the soldering process but a bit more finesse wouldn’t hurt.

As this is a Class II device, I fitted a double pole switch onto the front of the mains cable connection box, with the switch terminals insulated with two layers of heat shrinkable sleeving. Thus, I can switch the fan on from the bench, with no need to grovel around underneath, plugging and unplugging.

Looks very effective. Be warned that it's amazing how a draught cools a soldering iron - even a temperature controlled one. Practical upshot can be that when you come to solder something with a bit of thermal mass, your iron is already working overtime to overcome its losses to the environment and doesn't have any heat to spare for the work.

Aye,
I suppose the draught is a downside, but we’ll see what happens on the next project. :)

Might be worth putting a filter on the end to stop spiders/the cat/small children getting up there!

Anyway, the extraction seems to work nicely.
