#1 834 zero Bias Amp

Post by nic »

Eric Barbour did one , everything else claimed to be zero bias is A2 so I thought I'd have a stab at it . Not my best effort but I had to try it ;) Not too impressed though , so far I've used triode triode connected 4-65A in A1 and HK54 in A2 in this setup , 834 in zero bias sounds grainy . I know it's not the input stage (choke loaded 3C24) as I've had in this installed in all three setups . Maybe I should let the 834 break in a bit more ?

cheers

Nic

Hi Nic,

I don't know about the 834, but I do have the 833 with zero bias. I also tried it with a cathode resistor with approx 100V bias.

I couldn't really tell any difference except the resistor got so hot it could have ignited the breadboard so I took it out and left it at that.

Regards

How are you driving it ? I'm using a CCS loaded 6BX7 cathode follower running 25mA . Hoping that a choke in place of the CCS will improve matters . This is the first thoriated amp I've done that's sounded crap !

cheers

I'm driving the 833 with my PX4 amp.

MH41-cap coupled, PX4.

From the PX4 output transformer I'm driving the 833 from the speaker terminals.
Effectively using the output transformers as a 19:1 step down transformer.

Works rather well and has to be the best sounding amp I've built or heard to date.
