I had a look at Daphile today - I installed it on a low power Intel NUC and hooked it up to my NAS music library, which was all pretty simple.

I've just connected it to the RTZ DAC (which has a JLSounds USB module - no problem connecting!) and it does a nice job of playing DSD recordings . It stutters when I try to resample PCM to DSD (at DSD64), which I was half-expecting as the processor is a really lighweight Intel Atom. That said, Daphile is doing a full scan of the library so I'll try again when its finished doing it stuff.

Daphile is a free Linux-based derivative of Squeezebox-server an squeezelite.
Sorry, I couldn't resist!

I've been in communication with Lyuben for a while and he's been helpful confirming I've set it up okay. (What all the stuff in the manual about config with different dacs is about I've no idea, it just confuses things.)

It's odd why the NUC isn't fully playing with the I2Sover USB board. I'm wondering if I might need a full rebuild of the NUC, which I really don't want to do.

You can boot Daphile from an iso image on a USB memory stick without changing your Win10 install on the NUC - it would be very quick and eay to do that and see if your JLSounds board works with it.

Good point Ray, something for me to think about.

I do wonder if there's something crucial missing in the cut-down Windows install on the NUC, assuming it is cut-down of course.

I've been messing with other things Ray. I've got a workaround with my phone at the moment but will get back to this when I've had a play with the op amp gain stage for the MoFo.

It's taken a long time but the DAC is finally boxed up.

It's a Hammond 12 x 8 x 3 chassis which is a nice size. It was a bit of a squeeze though, and I'm not sure I would have got it all in there without AutoCAD to lay it out. Even then I had to unsolder the USB port from the I2SoverUSB board.

The biggest problem to solve was cutting a window in the chassis for the display. My metalworking skills are pretty poor and I knew there was next to no chance I'd be able to cut it to the right size and neatly with straight lines. I thought about asking a friend to 3D print a black bezel to sit over the edge to cover it all, but then thought I'd have a go with wood.

I'd nearly finished the cover but lost care and focus on the router table and had to have a second go

After 4 coats of water based varnish and a final wax. It's a nice piece of oak but I wish I'd darkened it a touch now.

Now I need to leave it alone and not play further. Can't help thinking about different power supplies though...
