Keeping Your Vinyl Pristine

I have a colleague who is really into his music and has a large vinyl collection. He knows of my interest in audio and asked about vinyl cleaning recommendations, including machines. I'm well out of touch on that topic but I'm sure some you Liquorice Pizza aficionados will have some recommendations I can pass on.

I asked about his turntable - he has a Project model but I don't recall which one. I did suggest his large collection could be better served with a better turntable but I think he's just content to listen to his music...

Id recommend the disco antistat manual cleaner, just use something other than the cleaning fluid that comes with it, it tends to leave a bit of residue on the disc. Simple and easy to use and worth it to clean old records. It can make even the worst old shite at least playable. It even works on des o'connor records

I got a moth rcm off our dave a few years ago, best thing i have bought. Expensive new, there is a project machine called the vcs which seems at least reasonable value, still 300 quid new though.

If you are a complete nerd like me who plays nothing but vinyl or have an extensive collection then its reasonable value.



If you dont play vinyl that much, the disco antistat is good enough

I use a ultrasonic cleaner and an enzyme based cleaner in water .
Heated to 36 degrees .

You have to clean for half an hour for the enzyme cleaner to work.

I have been using it for seven years , no issues.

I think isopropyl alcohol and distilled water is snake oil .

The ultrasonic cleaner and record spinner , bought separately , cost £85 . This was before everybody jumped on the bandwagon

A misguided audio alarmist as elsewhere suggested that ultrasonic is bad for vinyl. This is what happens when you let theory you don't fully understand triumph over empiricism .

Well, it seems that a Christmas surprise might have been spoit - my colleague was following up on a Moth record cleaner that I was put onto by Nigel and he mentioned it to his wife - she told him not to buy it because....
